Navršilo se petnaest godina od smrti Mate Parlova (Split, 16. studenoga 1948. – Pula, 29. srpnja 2008.). Rodio se u Splitu, a podrijetlom je bio iz Imotskog.

Bio je hrvatski boksač i olimpijski, europski i svjetski osvajač zlatnog odličja za bivšu Jugoslaviju. U profesionalnoj karijeri osvojio je 1976. godine naslov europskog prvaka u poluteškoj kategoriji i naslov svjetskog prvaka u poluteškoj kategoriji po WBC-u 1978. godine.

Bio je prvi boksač iz socijalističkih zemalja koji je osvojio profesionalnu svjetsku titulu. Mate Parlov je uz to jedini boksač u povijesti tog sporta koji je u istoj kategoriji osvojio olimpijsku, europsku i svjetsku amatersku, te europsku i svjetsku profesionalnu titulu.

Već za života je proglašen najboljim hrvatskim sportašem 20. stoljeća.

Nakon završetka aktivne boksačke karijere Parlov, diplomirani ekonomist, živio je u Fažani pokraj Pule, daleko od javnog života. Vodio je vlastiti kafić "Mate" u Puli. U ožujku 2008. godine dijagnosticiran mu je rak pluća. Preminuo je četiri mjeseca kasnije, 29. srpnja 2008. godine. Njegovim imenom nazvan je 2008. Dom sportova u Puli, a 2016. šetnica u Fažani.

U kasnim 1990-ima Parlov je priznao svoju tajnu strast – čitanje poezije. Za Nedjeljnu Dalmaciju rekao je kako je na njega utjecao stariji brat koji je bio profesor hrvatskog jezika. Ponekad se psihološki pripremao za borbu čitanjem hrvatske poezije.

2004. godine dao je Igoru Lasiću jedan od najpoznatijih i često citiranih intervjua koji je objavljen je u magazinu Dani.

Izdvajamo iz toga razgovora nekoliko misli Mate Parlova:

O sportu:

- Gonila me želja da uspijem u onome u čemu sam osjetio da sam dobar. Nekakav prometejski oganj, volja za postignućem visokih ciljeva. Čim sam krenuo u to, morao sam... Dobro, nisam morao, ali sam tako to doživljavao. Da nisam imao tu upornost i nešto malo talenta, ne bih došao do vrha.

O talentu i tehnici:

E, to sam tek kasnije shvatio, nakon što sam već sve osvojio. Imao sam strpljivost, znao sam čekati i udariti kad treba. Prije sam bio nagao, htio rješavati stvari na silu, dok nisam vidio da i sam imam ahilovu petu. Dotad sam mislio da može kuća past‘ na mene i da mi ništa neće biti. Čudan je to polet, zanos... Onda sam 1970. bio poražen, nokautiran od jednog Nijemca, i nakon toga sam se prizemljio. Nije manje važno znati uzmaknuti, od znanja udaračkog.

O agresiji:

Nisam agresivan ni bio, ali jesam prilično žestok. Pa onaj me poraz smirio. Dotad sam udarao na silu, a onda sam se suočio s vlastitim, normalnim ograničenjima i počeo razmišljati. Shvatio sam da moram pobijediti sam sebe ako želim savladati druge. I to je bio najveći moj uspjeh. Odgovor na pitanje kako primiti udarac i suspregnuti bijes, ne pojuriti odmah na protivnika, strpiti se, pričekati pravi trenutak. Tako se zadaju bolji udarci i prima se manje opasnih...

O nacionalizmu:

Da - kako ja mogu biti nacionalist ako sam svjetski prvak? Mnogi to ne razumiju. Nisu bili ni prvaci države, a često ni sami sebe nisu uspjeli pobijediti. Svijet se divio mojim rezultatima i svi su me svugdje prihvaćali kao svoga, bijeli i crni, svejedno. Upoznao sam svijet, i ne mogu biti ništa doli kozmopolit. Tako ja gledam i na sport i na život.

O poeziji:

Nadahnjivao sam se stihovima još od djetinjstva. Kasnije još izrazitije, u trenucima raznih kriza. Kao što kaže Tin u Ganutljivim opaskama: "Prebolio sam strasti, pa i ljutu pizmu./Prekužio sam bijes na vjerolomstvo./Prostodušno se čudim vandalizmu./Ja bivam mlađi. Svijete, ja sam tvoje potomstvo!"

Tako se i sam smatram potomkom svijeta, iako ne bih dao na se i na svoje. Ali muče me pitanja koja se tiču cijelog svijeta. Suosjećanje nas sve vezuje.

Navršilo se petnaest godina od smrti Mate Parlova (Split, 16. studenoga 1948. – Pula, 29. srpnja 2008.). Rodio se u Splitu, a podrijetlom je bio iz Imotskog.

Bio je hrvatski boksač i olimpijski, europski i svjetski osvajač zlatnog odličja za bivšu Jugoslaviju. U profesionalnoj karijeri osvojio je 1976. godine naslov europskog prvaka u poluteškoj kategoriji i naslov svjetskog prvaka u poluteškoj kategoriji po WBC-u 1978. godine.

Bio je prvi boksač iz socijalističkih zemalja koji je osvojio profesionalnu svjetsku titulu. Mate Parlov je uz to jedini boksač u povijesti tog sporta koji je u istoj kategoriji osvojio olimpijsku, europsku i svjetsku amatersku, te europsku i svjetsku profesionalnu titulu.

Već za života je proglašen najboljim hrvatskim sportašem 20. stoljeća.

Nakon završetka aktivne boksačke karijere Parlov, diplomirani ekonomist, živio je u Fažani pokraj Pule, daleko od javnog života. Vodio je vlastiti kafić "Mate" u Puli. U ožujku 2008. godine dijagnosticiran mu je rak pluća. Preminuo je četiri mjeseca kasnije, 29. srpnja 2008. godine. Njegovim imenom nazvan je 2008. Dom sportova u Puli, a 2016. šetnica u Fažani.

U kasnim 1990-ima Parlov je priznao svoju tajnu strast – čitanje poezije. Za Nedjeljnu Dalmaciju rekao je kako je na njega utjecao stariji brat koji je bio profesor hrvatskog jezika. Ponekad se psihološki pripremao za borbu čitanjem hrvatske poezije.

2004. godine dao je Igoru Lasiću jedan od najpoznatijih i često citiranih intervjua koji je objavljen je u magazinu Dani.

Izdvajamo iz toga razgovora nekoliko misli Mate Parlova:

O sportu:

- Gonila me želja da uspijem u onome u čemu sam osjetio da sam dobar. Nekakav prometejski oganj, volja za postignućem visokih ciljeva. Čim sam krenuo u to, morao sam... Dobro, nisam morao, ali sam tako to doživljavao. Da nisam imao tu upornost i nešto malo talenta, ne bih došao do vrha.

O talentu i tehnici:

E, to sam tek kasnije shvatio, nakon što sam već sve osvojio. Imao sam strpljivost, znao sam čekati i udariti kad treba. Prije sam bio nagao, htio rješavati stvari na silu, dok nisam vidio da i sam imam ahilovu petu. Dotad sam mislio da može kuća past‘ na mene i da mi ništa neće biti. Čudan je to polet, zanos... Onda sam 1970. bio poražen, nokautiran od jednog Nijemca, i nakon toga sam se prizemljio. Nije manje važno znati uzmaknuti, od znanja udaračkog.

O agresiji:

Nisam agresivan ni bio, ali jesam prilično žestok. Pa onaj me poraz smirio. Dotad sam udarao na silu, a onda sam se suočio s vlastitim, normalnim ograničenjima i počeo razmišljati. Shvatio sam da moram pobijediti sam sebe ako želim savladati druge. I to je bio najveći moj uspjeh. Odgovor na pitanje kako primiti udarac i suspregnuti bijes, ne pojuriti odmah na protivnika, strpiti se, pričekati pravi trenutak. Tako se zadaju bolji udarci i prima se manje opasnih...

O nacionalizmu:

Da - kako ja mogu biti nacionalist ako sam svjetski prvak? Mnogi to ne razumiju. Nisu bili ni prvaci države, a često ni sami sebe nisu uspjeli pobijediti. Svijet se divio mojim rezultatima i svi su me svugdje prihvaćali kao svoga, bijeli i crni, svejedno. Upoznao sam svijet, i ne mogu biti ništa doli kozmopolit. Tako ja gledam i na sport i na život.

O poeziji:

Nadahnjivao sam se stihovima još od djetinjstva. Kasnije još izrazitije, u trenucima raznih kriza. Kao što kaže Tin u Ganutljivim opaskama: "Prebolio sam strasti, pa i ljutu pizmu./Prekužio sam bijes na vjerolomstvo./Prostodušno se čudim vandalizmu./Ja bivam mlađi. Svijete, ja sam tvoje potomstvo!"

Tako se i sam smatram potomkom svijeta, iako ne bih dao na se i na svoje. Ali muče me pitanja koja se tiču cijelog svijeta. Suosjećanje nas sve vezuje.

Navršilo se petnaest godina od smrti Mate Parlova (Split, 16. studenoga 1948. – Pula, 29. srpnja 2008.). Rodio se u Splitu, a podrijetlom je bio iz Imotskog.

Bio je hrvatski boksač i olimpijski, europski i svjetski osvajač zlatnog odličja za bivšu Jugoslaviju. U profesionalnoj karijeri osvojio je 1976. godine naslov europskog prvaka u poluteškoj kategoriji i naslov svjetskog prvaka u poluteškoj kategoriji po WBC-u 1978. godine.

Bio je prvi boksač iz socijalističkih zemalja koji je osvojio profesionalnu svjetsku titulu. Mate Parlov je uz to jedini boksač u povijesti tog sporta koji je u istoj kategoriji osvojio olimpijsku, europsku i svjetsku amatersku, te europsku i svjetsku profesionalnu titulu.

Već za života je proglašen najboljim hrvatskim sportašem 20. stoljeća.
