Božićni blagdani u Britaniji opet su obilježeni naglim porastom broja zaraženih od covida-19. Prošle godine blagdansko raspoloženje pokvarila je pojava alfa varijante koronavirusa. Ovaj put je krivac omikron. U brojnim britanskim restoranima, pubovima i noćnim klubovima otkazuju se božićne i novogodišnje proslave, a zemlja je na pragu još jedne sumorne Nove godine. Britanski zdravstveni sustav (NHS) još jednom upozorava na moguće preopterećenje sustava zbog rasta broja teško bolesnih pacijenata, piše The Guardian, iako niz eksperata u brojnim drugim medijima ističe da je vjerojatnost takvog scenarija mala, prenosi jutarnji.hr.
No, samo spominjanje tog ekstremnog scenarija budi strahove da bi notorne 'mjere' mogle oblikovati božićne i novogodišnje blagdane i u godinama koje su pred nama. Je li opravdano povlačiti paralele između ovogodišnjeg i lanjskog Božića?, pita se The Guardian koji je pokušao odgovoriti na četiri ključna pitanja o pandemiji.
Koje su sličnosti ovogodišnjeg rasta broja slučajeva sa situacijom prošle zime?
- Na prvi pogled, sličnost je zapanjujuća, u samo nekoliko tjedana naglo je porastao broj zaraženih koronavirusom u Velikoj Britaniji. Ipak, broj hospitalizacija i smrtnih slučajeva ove godine zasad je jako nizak, a najnovije istraživanje sugerira da nova varijanta omikron uzrokuje daleko manji broj teških oboljenja u odnosu na ranije varijante.
Autori studije smatraju da je to dobra vijest, ali svejedno pozivaju na oprez. Broj novozaraženih na dnevnoj bazi i dalje raste: u petak je u Britaniji bilo rekordnih 122.000 slučajeva, a procijenjeno je da je prošloga tjedna u zemlji bilo 1,7 milijuna aktivnih slučajeva.
Ima li značajnije razlike kod zaraženih omikronom gledano po dobnoj skupini?
- Ključna je stvar da su novozaraženi uglavnom mlađe osobe, zbog čega su neki znanstvenici upozorili da bi broj hospitalizacija mogao skočiti ako bi od omikrona počela obolijevati starija populacija. S druge strane, veliki broj ljudi, osobito starija populacija, cijepljena je s dvije doze, pa čak i booster dozom te su stekli značajnu zaštitu od omikrona. Bit će zanimljivo vidjeti kako će ovi različiti faktori utjecati na brojke. U ovom trenutku, podaci se još uvijek analiziraju i prerano je za bilo kakav konačni zaključak. U isto vrijeme, još uvijek se moraju donositi političke odluke za zaštitu javnog zdravlja.

- U određenom pogledu, to je prednost virusa ako utječe na ljude tako da se ne razbole previše - jer tada mogu hodati okolo i družiti se s drugima i još više širiti virus, rekao je Tang.
Hoće li se covid-19 pretvoriti u bolest nalik gripi?
- Neki zdravstveni djelatnici predviđaju da bi se covid-19 mogao manifestirati kao gripa, za koju će svake godine trebati razvijati novo cjepivo zbog novih sojeva koji se pojavljuju svake godine. Ipak, profesor Martin Hibberd s Londonske škole za higijenu i tropsku medicinu inzistira da se koronavirusi ne ponašaju na takav način.
- Koronavirusi se ne pojavljuju kao novi sojevi svake godine. Razlog zašto dobijemo prehladu zimi je taj što naš imunitet na koronavirus ne traje dugo. Čini se da je ovaj virus sličniji onima koji uzrokuju običnu prehladu. Drugim riječima, možda ćemo se i dalje morati cijepiti protiv covida-19 jer će imunitet uvijek slabiti, rekao je.
Tang upozorava da to ne znači da nas idućih pet godina očekuje propast i tuga, prenosi jutarnji.hr.
- Mislim da će virus vrlo brzo evoluirati iz pandemijskog soja i postati blaži, do točke u kojoj ćemo možda morati razmišljati samo o cijepljenju ranjive populacije, rekao je.

Božićni blagdani u Britaniji opet su obilježeni naglim porastom broja zaraženih od covida-19. Prošle godine blagdansko raspoloženje pokvarila je pojava alfa varijante koronavirusa. Ovaj put je krivac omikron. U brojnim britanskim restoranima, pubovima i noćnim klubovima otkazuju se božićne i novogodišnje proslave, a zemlja je na pragu još jedne sumorne Nove godine. Britanski zdravstveni sustav (NHS) još jednom upozorava na moguće preopterećenje sustava zbog rasta broja teško bolesnih pacijenata, piše The Guardian, iako niz eksperata u brojnim drugim medijima ističe da je vjerojatnost takvog scenarija mala, prenosi jutarnji.hr.
No, samo spominjanje tog ekstremnog scenarija budi strahove da bi notorne 'mjere' mogle oblikovati božićne i novogodišnje blagdane i u godinama koje su pred nama. Je li opravdano povlačiti paralele između ovogodišnjeg i lanjskog Božića?, pita se The Guardian koji je pokušao odgovoriti na četiri ključna pitanja o pandemiji.
Koje su sličnosti ovogodišnjeg rasta broja slučajeva sa situacijom prošle zime?
- Na prvi pogled, sličnost je zapanjujuća, u samo nekoliko tjedana naglo je porastao broj zaraženih koronavirusom u Velikoj Britaniji. Ipak, broj hospitalizacija i smrtnih slučajeva ove godine zasad je jako nizak, a najnovije istraživanje sugerira da nova varijanta omikron uzrokuje daleko manji broj teških oboljenja u odnosu na ranije varijante.
Autori studije smatraju da je to dobra vijest, ali svejedno pozivaju na oprez. Broj novozaraženih na dnevnoj bazi i dalje raste: u petak je u Britaniji bilo rekordnih 122.000 slučajeva, a procijenjeno je da je prošloga tjedna u zemlji bilo 1,7 milijuna aktivnih slučajeva.
Ima li značajnije razlike kod zaraženih omikronom gledano po dobnoj skupini?
- Ključna je stvar da su novozaraženi uglavnom mlađe osobe, zbog čega su neki znanstvenici upozorili da bi broj hospitalizacija mogao skočiti ako bi od omikrona počela obolijevati starija populacija. S druge strane, veliki broj ljudi, osobito starija populacija, cijepljena je s dvije doze, pa čak i booster dozom te su stekli značajnu zaštitu od omikrona. Bit će zanimljivo vidjeti kako će ovi različiti faktori utjecati na brojke. U ovom trenutku, podaci se još uvijek analiziraju i prerano je za bilo kakav konačni zaključak. U isto vrijeme, još uvijek se moraju donositi političke odluke za zaštitu javnog zdravlja.
- Imamo neizbježno zaostajanje od trenutka zaraze do hospitalizacije. U međuvremenu se moraju donijeti političke odluke, a to nije jednostavno, rekao je epidemiolog Mark Woolhouse sa Sveučilišta Edinburgh.
Hoće li virus izgubiti moć da uzrokuje teža oboljenja?
- Mnogi znanstvenici vjeruju da dokazi sugeriraju bi to moglo biti točno. Nedavna istraživanja u Škotskoj, Engleskoj i Južnoafričkoj Republici govore tome u prilog.
- Imam osjećaj da je ova varijanta prvi korak u procesu u kojem se virus prilagođava ljudskoj populaciji kako bi izazvao benignije simptome, rekao je dr. Julian Tang, profesor za respiratorne infekcije pri Sveučilištu Leicester.
- U određenom pogledu, to je prednost virusa ako utječe na ljude tako da se ne razbole previše - jer tada mogu hodati okolo i družiti se s drugima i još više širiti virus, rekao je Tang.
Hoće li se covid-19 pretvoriti u bolest nalik gripi?
- Neki zdravstveni djelatnici predviđaju da bi se covid-19 mogao manifestirati kao gripa, za koju će svake godine trebati razvijati novo cjepivo zbog novih sojeva koji se pojavljuju svake godine. Ipak, profesor Martin Hibberd s Londonske škole za higijenu i tropsku medicinu inzistira da se koronavirusi ne ponašaju na takav način.
- Koronavirusi se ne pojavljuju kao novi sojevi svake godine. Razlog zašto dobijemo prehladu zimi je taj što naš imunitet na koronavirus ne traje dugo. Čini se da je ovaj virus sličniji onima koji uzrokuju običnu prehladu. Drugim riječima, možda ćemo se i dalje morati cijepiti protiv covida-19 jer će imunitet uvijek slabiti, rekao je.
Tang upozorava da to ne znači da nas idućih pet godina očekuje propast i tuga, prenosi jutarnji.hr.
- Mislim da će virus vrlo brzo evoluirati iz pandemijskog soja i postati blaži, do točke u kojoj ćemo možda morati razmišljati samo o cijepljenju ranjive populacije, rekao je.
