Nagli porast slučajeva indijske varijante koronavirusa u Ujedinjenom Kraljevstvu mogao bi poremetiti zacrtani plan otvaranja Velike Britanije.

Prošli je tjedan Public Health England (PHE), agencija britanskog ministarstva zdravstva, proglasila indijski soj koronavirusa, B.1.617.2, 'zabrinjavajućom varijantom' dok zaraza nastavlja širiti dijelovima Velike Britanije. Riječ je o jednoj od tri vrlo slične varijante koronavirusa, prvo detektiranih u Indiji. Ostale dvije su B.1.617.1 i B.1.617.3.

Navedene varijante su zabrinjavajuće jer imaju jednu ili dvije mutacije u proteinu šiljka - ovisno o varijanti - za koje se smatra da mogu pomoći virusu u izbjegavanju imunosnog odgovora organizma i učiniti ga zaraznijim.

Profesorica Christina Pagel, direktorica jedinice za klinička istraživanja na University Collega u Londonu i članica grupe nezavisnih stručnjaka, za Guardian je izjavila kako je porast slučajeva soja B.1.617.2 dovoljno zabrinjavajući da bi mogao odgodti sljedeću fazu otvaranja zakazanu za ponedjeljak 17. svibnja, kada je planirano ukidanje niz dosadašnjih epidemioloških ograničenja.

Dok se britanski soj smanjuje i stabilizira, indijski buja. Do 7. svibnja evidentirano je 1.393 slučajeva zaraženih ovom mutacijom, što je čini drugom najčešćom varijantom u Velikoj Britaniji. U nekim dijelovima zemlje, poput Boltona i Blackburna, varijanta je dominantna u čak 50 posto zaraženih slučajeva.

Prema dokumentima koji su iscurili iz PHE-a, Guardian je doznao da je identificirano 48 žarišta soja B.1.617.2, uključujući ona povezana sa srednjim školama, ustanovama za starije osobe i vjerskim okupljanjima. U nekim zajednicama došlo je internog prijenosa zaraze.

Andy Burnham, gradonačelnik Velikog Manchestera, rekao je da zajednički odbor za cijepljenje razmatra zahtjev za cijepljenjem svih starijih od 16 godina u Boltonu zbog sve veće stope zaraze.

Profesorica Christina Pagel naglašava kako je, unatoč tome što broj slučajeva sa sojem B.1.617.2 trenutno nije toliko velik, zabrinjavajuće što se iz tjedna u tjedan taj broj udvostručava.

Znanstvenica stoga ukazuje kako Britanci ne bi trebali ponavljati prijašnje greške budući su i prije kasnili s reakcijom na nove sojeve, a onda kad bi vrag odnio šalu postavljali pitanja zašto nisu reagirali odmah.  

„Budući se većina naših planova za otključavanje oslanja na zaštitu koju pruža cijepljenje, glavna mi je briga to što još uvijek ne znamo u kojoj mjeri mnoge varijante zaobilaze prirodno stečeni imunitet ili onaj izazvan vakcinacijom - rekao je Andrew Hayward, direktor UCL Instituta za epidemiologiju i zdravstvenu zaštitu.

Podsjeća kako znamo da je cjepivo vrlo učinkovito protiv britanskog soja, ali da je manje učinkovito u zaštiti od varijante porijeklom iz Južne Afrike, dok za mutanta iz Indije nemaju podataka i raspolažu s  relativno malo laboratorijskih informacija da bi procijenili u kojoj mjeri može izbjeći postignuti imunitet.

Martin McKee, profesor javnog zdravstva na Londonskoj školi za higijenu i tropsku medicinu, također je za Guardian kazao kako su on i njegovi kolege vrlo zabrinuti.

“Još uvijek ima mnogo ljudi, posebno mladih, kao i onih iz manjinski skupina koji su još uvijek necijepljeni. Manje me brinu njihovi susreti na otvorenome jer su rizici tamo mali, ali osobno ću i dalje izbjegavati sastanke u zatvorenom, poput restorana, iako sam u potpunosti cijepljen – kazao je profesor.

Nagli porast slučajeva indijske varijante koronavirusa u Ujedinjenom Kraljevstvu mogao bi poremetiti zacrtani plan otvaranja Velike Britanije.

Prošli je tjedan Public Health England (PHE), agencija britanskog ministarstva zdravstva, proglasila indijski soj koronavirusa, B.1.617.2, 'zabrinjavajućom varijantom' dok zaraza nastavlja širiti dijelovima Velike Britanije. Riječ je o jednoj od tri vrlo slične varijante koronavirusa, prvo detektiranih u Indiji. Ostale dvije su B.1.617.1 i B.1.617.3.

Navedene varijante su zabrinjavajuće jer imaju jednu ili dvije mutacije u proteinu šiljka - ovisno o varijanti - za koje se smatra da mogu pomoći virusu u izbjegavanju imunosnog odgovora organizma i učiniti ga zaraznijim.

Profesorica Christina Pagel, direktorica jedinice za klinička istraživanja na University Collega u Londonu i članica grupe nezavisnih stručnjaka, za Guardian je izjavila kako je porast slučajeva soja B.1.617.2 dovoljno zabrinjavajući da bi mogao odgodti sljedeću fazu otvaranja zakazanu za ponedjeljak 17. svibnja, kada je planirano ukidanje niz dosadašnjih epidemioloških ograničenja.

Dok se britanski soj smanjuje i stabilizira, indijski buja. Do 7. svibnja evidentirano je 1.393 slučajeva zaraženih ovom mutacijom, što je čini drugom najčešćom varijantom u Velikoj Britaniji. U nekim dijelovima zemlje, poput Boltona i Blackburna, varijanta je dominantna u čak 50 posto zaraženih slučajeva.

Prema dokumentima koji su iscurili iz PHE-a, Guardian je doznao da je identificirano 48 žarišta soja B.1.617.2, uključujući ona povezana sa srednjim školama, ustanovama za starije osobe i vjerskim okupljanjima. U nekim zajednicama došlo je internog prijenosa zaraze.

Andy Burnham, gradonačelnik Velikog Manchestera, rekao je da zajednički odbor za cijepljenje razmatra zahtjev za cijepljenjem svih starijih od 16 godina u Boltonu zbog sve veće stope zaraze.

Profesorica Christina Pagel naglašava kako je, unatoč tome što broj slučajeva sa sojem B.1.617.2 trenutno nije toliko velik, zabrinjavajuće što se iz tjedna u tjedan taj broj udvostručava.

Znanstvenica stoga ukazuje kako Britanci ne bi trebali ponavljati prijašnje greške budući su i prije kasnili s reakcijom na nove sojeve, a onda kad bi vrag odnio šalu postavljali pitanja zašto nisu reagirali odmah.  

„Budući se većina naših planova za otključavanje oslanja na zaštitu koju pruža cijepljenje, glavna mi je briga to što još uvijek ne znamo u kojoj mjeri mnoge varijante zaobilaze prirodno stečeni imunitet ili onaj izazvan vakcinacijom - rekao je Andrew Hayward, direktor UCL Instituta za epidemiologiju i zdravstvenu zaštitu.

Podsjeća kako znamo da je cjepivo vrlo učinkovito protiv britanskog soja, ali da je manje učinkovito u zaštiti od varijante porijeklom iz Južne Afrike, dok za mutanta iz Indije nemaju podataka i raspolažu s  relativno malo laboratorijskih informacija da bi procijenili u kojoj mjeri može izbjeći postignuti imunitet.

Martin McKee, profesor javnog zdravstva na Londonskoj školi za higijenu i tropsku medicinu, također je za Guardian kazao kako su on i njegovi kolege vrlo zabrinuti.

“Još uvijek ima mnogo ljudi, posebno mladih, kao i onih iz manjinski skupina koji su još uvijek necijepljeni. Manje me brinu njihovi susreti na otvorenome jer su rizici tamo mali, ali osobno ću i dalje izbjegavati sastanke u zatvorenom, poput restorana, iako sam u potpunosti cijepljen – kazao je profesor.
