Ključan segment u nastojanju Pfizera, Moderne i drugih farmaceutskih kompanija da stvore cjepivo protiv koronavirusa pronalaženje je tisuća doborovoljaca koji su voljni sudjelovati u kliničkim ispitivanjima.

AFP- ova dopisnica u Miamiju, Leia Macor, sudjelovala je u istraživanju američke Moderne, koja je nedavno objavila da je njezino eksperimentalno cjepivo uspješno 95 posto.

Zašto je Macor, koja pati od astme, odlučila biti jedna od 30.000 Moderninih dobrovoljaca? Prijavila se samo nekoliko tjedana nakon što joj je od koronavirusa umro otac.

Ovo je njezina priča.

Tri tjedna prije nego što su Pfizer i Moderna krenuli u klinička ispitivanja krajem srpnja, umro je moj otac. Umro je sam, kao i mnogi drugi u ovoj krizi. 

Dok je moja obitelj prolazila kroz traumu i opraštala se s njim kako je najbolje znala, suočila sam se s drugom mračnom i opasnom stvarnošću - Miami je postao žarište pandemije i moj je posao bio izvještavati o tome. 

No moj se život nepovratno promijenio. Izgubila sam oca i imam astmu, koja može dovesti do ozbiljnih komplikacija ako se zarazim. 

Zamisao da poduzmem nešto kako bih pomogla da se ta smrtonosna medicinska opasnost stavi pod kontrolu nudila mi je neki unutarnji mir. 

Razgovarala sam o tomu s prijateljima i obitelji. Oni su mi pomogli da prihvatim pretpostavku da bilo kakve nuspojave ispitivanja ne mogu biti gore od toga da dobijem covid-19. 

Prelomila sam. Dva dana nakon pisanja reportaže o početku treće faze ispitivanja na Floridi, ponovno sam pokucala na vrata laboratorija. Ovaj put kao potencijalna sudionica. 

Laboratorij u predgrađu Miamija radio je naizmjence za Pfizer i Modernu, jedan dan za jednu, drugi za drugu tvrtku. 

Dobila sam termin za sredinu kolovoza. Bio je utorak - Modernin dan. Laboratorijsko osoblje objasnilo mi je postupak. Dobila sam i dokument na 22 stranice sa svim detaljima. 

Ispitivanje se sastoji od dviju doza. Dobrovoljci su plaćeni 2400 dolara za dvogodišnje istraživanje. Upozoreni smo na moguće nuspojave, od boli na mjestu uboda do temperature i drhtavice. 

Trideset tisuća sudionika podijeljeno je u dvije skupine, jedna dobiva cjepivo, druga placebo. 

"Čak ni mi ne znamo koje je koje", rekla mi je sestra kad sam je pitala u kojoj sam skupini. To samo Moderna zna. "Pojest će me to što ne znam", rekla sam joj. 

Sestra me pogledala dok mi je mjerila tlak i ozbiljno rekla: "Placebo je jednako važan kao i cjepivo. Ispitivanje treba kontrolnu skupinu. Pomažete čovječanstvu na oba načina".

Osjećala sam se krivom što sam opsesivno brinula o vlastitom stanju umjesto da se fokusiram na viši cilj - pobjedu nad pandemijom, pa sam prestala s pitanjima.

Sestra mi je uzela šest ili osam ampula krvi, izgubila sam se u brojenju. Dala mi je test na trudnoću i naglasila da je važno koristiti kontracepciju za trajanja ispitivanja jer nije poznat učinak mogućih nuspojava na plod. 

Tada je došlo dvoje ljudi s cjepivom u hladnjaku. Ili s placebom. 

Smijali su se kad sam poželjela dokumentirati trenutak fotografijom. Njima je to bio običan radni dan. Ubod injekcijr nije bolio. Odveli su me u čekaonicu gdje sam preventivno ostala pola sata na promatranju. 

Jedna od sestara nosila je kapu sa Supermanovom znakom. Pitala sam je zašto. "Jer smo svi ovdje superjunaci, curo", odgovorila mi je. 

Dobila sam hrpu suvenira, naljepnica, majica, maski s natpisima "covid ratnici" ili "covid superjunaci".

Laboratorij mi je instalirao aplikaciju za praćenje temperature i prijavu eventualnih simptoma. 

Kad sam stigla kući ruka me pomalo boljela. Pitala sam se je li to znak da sam dobila cjepivo? Tri dana pretraživanja interneta o mjestu uboda injekcijom, o boli u mišiću i sličnim pojmovima, nisu me odvela nigdje.  

Druga doza stigla je sredinom rujna. Boljelo je mnogo više i boljelo je neko vrijeme. Gruba crvena oteklina pojavila se na mjestu uboda. 

Ali ja još uvijek ne znam je li to bilo cjepivo ili placebo. Moram čekati da mi Moderna to jednoga dana kaže. 

S vremenom sam shvatila da je sudjelovanje u ispitivanju bio način da procesuiram tugu zbog gubitka oca i okretanja svijeta naglavačke.

Ključan segment u nastojanju Pfizera, Moderne i drugih farmaceutskih kompanija da stvore cjepivo protiv koronavirusa pronalaženje je tisuća doborovoljaca koji su voljni sudjelovati u kliničkim ispitivanjima.

AFP- ova dopisnica u Miamiju, Leia Macor, sudjelovala je u istraživanju američke Moderne, koja je nedavno objavila da je njezino eksperimentalno cjepivo uspješno 95 posto.

Zašto je Macor, koja pati od astme, odlučila biti jedna od 30.000 Moderninih dobrovoljaca? Prijavila se samo nekoliko tjedana nakon što joj je od koronavirusa umro otac.

Ovo je njezina priča.

Tri tjedna prije nego što su Pfizer i Moderna krenuli u klinička ispitivanja krajem srpnja, umro je moj otac. Umro je sam, kao i mnogi drugi u ovoj krizi. 

Dok je moja obitelj prolazila kroz traumu i opraštala se s njim kako je najbolje znala, suočila sam se s drugom mračnom i opasnom stvarnošću - Miami je postao žarište pandemije i moj je posao bio izvještavati o tome. 

No moj se život nepovratno promijenio. Izgubila sam oca i imam astmu, koja može dovesti do ozbiljnih komplikacija ako se zarazim. 

Zamisao da poduzmem nešto kako bih pomogla da se ta smrtonosna medicinska opasnost stavi pod kontrolu nudila mi je neki unutarnji mir. 

Razgovarala sam o tomu s prijateljima i obitelji. Oni su mi pomogli da prihvatim pretpostavku da bilo kakve nuspojave ispitivanja ne mogu biti gore od toga da dobijem covid-19. 

Prelomila sam. Dva dana nakon pisanja reportaže o početku treće faze ispitivanja na Floridi, ponovno sam pokucala na vrata laboratorija. Ovaj put kao potencijalna sudionica. 

Laboratorij u predgrađu Miamija radio je naizmjence za Pfizer i Modernu, jedan dan za jednu, drugi za drugu tvrtku. 

Dobila sam termin za sredinu kolovoza. Bio je utorak - Modernin dan. Laboratorijsko osoblje objasnilo mi je postupak. Dobila sam i dokument na 22 stranice sa svim detaljima. 

Ispitivanje se sastoji od dviju doza. Dobrovoljci su plaćeni 2400 dolara za dvogodišnje istraživanje. Upozoreni smo na moguće nuspojave, od boli na mjestu uboda do temperature i drhtavice. 

Trideset tisuća sudionika podijeljeno je u dvije skupine, jedna dobiva cjepivo, druga placebo. 

"Čak ni mi ne znamo koje je koje", rekla mi je sestra kad sam je pitala u kojoj sam skupini. To samo Moderna zna. "Pojest će me to što ne znam", rekla sam joj. 

Sestra me pogledala dok mi je mjerila tlak i ozbiljno rekla: "Placebo je jednako važan kao i cjepivo. Ispitivanje treba kontrolnu skupinu. Pomažete čovječanstvu na oba načina".

Osjećala sam se krivom što sam opsesivno brinula o vlastitom stanju umjesto da se fokusiram na viši cilj - pobjedu nad pandemijom, pa sam prestala s pitanjima.

Sestra mi je uzela šest ili osam ampula krvi, izgubila sam se u brojenju. Dala mi je test na trudnoću i naglasila da je važno koristiti kontracepciju za trajanja ispitivanja jer nije poznat učinak mogućih nuspojava na plod. 

Tada je došlo dvoje ljudi s cjepivom u hladnjaku. Ili s placebom. 

Smijali su se kad sam poželjela dokumentirati trenutak fotografijom. Njima je to bio običan radni dan. Ubod injekcijr nije bolio. Odveli su me u čekaonicu gdje sam preventivno ostala pola sata na promatranju. 

Jedna od sestara nosila je kapu sa Supermanovom znakom. Pitala sam je zašto. "Jer smo svi ovdje superjunaci, curo", odgovorila mi je. 

Dobila sam hrpu suvenira, naljepnica, majica, maski s natpisima "covid ratnici" ili "covid superjunaci".

Laboratorij mi je instalirao aplikaciju za praćenje temperature i prijavu eventualnih simptoma. 

Kad sam stigla kući ruka me pomalo boljela. Pitala sam se je li to znak da sam dobila cjepivo? Tri dana pretraživanja interneta o mjestu uboda injekcijom, o boli u mišiću i sličnim pojmovima, nisu me odvela nigdje.  

Druga doza stigla je sredinom rujna. Boljelo je mnogo više i boljelo je neko vrijeme. Gruba crvena oteklina pojavila se na mjestu uboda. 

Ali ja još uvijek ne znam je li to bilo cjepivo ili placebo. Moram čekati da mi Moderna to jednoga dana kaže. 

S vremenom sam shvatila da je sudjelovanje u ispitivanju bio način da procesuiram tugu zbog gubitka oca i okretanja svijeta naglavačke.
