British Motor Corporation (BMC) je 1959. predstavio legendarni mali automobil, koji je u povijest ušao kao Mini. Proglašen je 2000. drugim najboljim autom stoljeća, odmah iza Forda T (dakle najboljim europskim autom) te je potpuno promijenio izvedbu i filozofiju automobila. Dizajnirao ga je 1959. Alec Issigonis, britanski časnik grčko-njemačkog podrijetla, rođen u (danas) turskom Izmiru, koji je za svoje postignuće dobio titulu Sir.
Prostor za 4 osobe
U malenoj sandučastoj karoseriji, dugačkoj 305, širokoj 140 i visokoj 135 centimetara, uspio je stvoriti prostor za četiri osobe i prtljažnik od 116 litara. Tajna nevjerojatne prostranosti malenog automobila je u koncepciji. Motor je ugrađen poprečno ispred prednje osovine, u sklopu s mjenjačem (koristili su isto ulje) i pokretao prednje kotače.
Tada nije bila poznata izvedba s hladnjakom ugrađenim poprečno ispred motora, koji se hladio električnim ventilatorom preko termoprekidača. Zbog toga je ugrađen bočno (ispred poprečno postavljenog motora) te je zrak za hlađenje povlačio iz blatobrana, a ventilator se pokretao remenom. Iako to nije bilo dobro za hlađenje, kao što zajedničko ulje nije bilo dobro ni za motor, ni za mjenjač, u ostalome to je bio genijalan koncept.
U same kutove postavljeni su minijaturni kotači od 10 cola, a umjesto klasičnog ogibljenja, ugrađene su gumene kugle (gumielastic), koje su zauzimale malo prostora. Podnica je oslobođena kardanskog vratila te se sav prostor mogao ostaviti putnicima. Zbog toga je bio neočekivano prostran za četiri osobe, a moglo ih se ugurati i pet.
Tako je nastao jedan od najgenijalnijih automobila ikad konstruiranih, a prvi serijski modeli nosili su nazive Austin Seven i Morris Mini Minor. Prva se verzija pokretala motorom obujma 848 ccm i snage 34 KS pri 5500/min, što je bilo dovoljno za brzinu od 116 km/h. Za to su vrijeme bile to vrlo dobre performanse, a naknadno je stigla najuspješnija verzija 1000 s motorom snage 42 KS, a potom i 1275 ccm.
Mini kao hit
Uspjeh je bio iznad svih očekivanja. Mini je bio hit na većini europskih tržišta, posebice u Italiji, pa je pokrenuta licencna proizvodnja u Innocentiju. Postao je automobilska ikona i genijalno vozilo za grad, koje je preokrenulo razvoj gradskih automobila. Prema njegovoj poboljšanoj koncepciji, 1969. je napravljen Autobianchi A112, prethodnica Fiata 127 i Yuga 45.
Mini je bio uzor i prvom Golfu iz 1974., za dva broja manjem od sadašnjeg, a ostalo je povijest. Mini se u desetak verzija proizvodio sve do 2000. te je ukupno napravljeno 5.378.776 primjeraka. Nakon što je BMW kupio Rover, 2001. je uspješno uveden suvremeni nasljednik. Potom je BMW prodao i Rover i Land Rover, a u svom vlasništvu ostavio jedino novog Minija.
Četiri karoserijske verzije
Oduševljeni kupci tražili su dorađene verzije, pa je napravljen karavanski model Morris Mini Traveller, odnosno Austin Mini Countryman. Na njegovoj je osnovi napravljen maleni i iznenađujuće uspješni dostavnjak, sa zatvorenim stražnjim dijelom, i pickup - Van.
Mini se montirao i u Španjolskoj, Portugalu, Belgiji, Južnoj Africi, Australiji, Novom Zelandu, Urugvaju, Venezueli… Na cestama je još više od deset tisuća primjeraka, dvadesetak na dalmatinskim cestama.

British Motor Corporation (BMC) je 1959. predstavio legendarni mali automobil, koji je u povijest ušao kao Mini. Proglašen je 2000. drugim najboljim autom stoljeća, odmah iza Forda T (dakle najboljim europskim autom) te je potpuno promijenio izvedbu i filozofiju automobila. Dizajnirao ga je 1959. Alec Issigonis, britanski časnik grčko-njemačkog podrijetla, rođen u (danas) turskom Izmiru, koji je za svoje postignuće dobio titulu Sir.
Prostor za 4 osobe
U malenoj sandučastoj karoseriji, dugačkoj 305, širokoj 140 i visokoj 135 centimetara, uspio je stvoriti prostor za četiri osobe i prtljažnik od 116 litara. Tajna nevjerojatne prostranosti malenog automobila je u koncepciji. Motor je ugrađen poprečno ispred prednje osovine, u sklopu s mjenjačem (koristili su isto ulje) i pokretao prednje kotače.
Tada nije bila poznata izvedba s hladnjakom ugrađenim poprečno ispred motora, koji se hladio električnim ventilatorom preko termoprekidača. Zbog toga je ugrađen bočno (ispred poprečno postavljenog motora) te je zrak za hlađenje povlačio iz blatobrana, a ventilator se pokretao remenom. Iako to nije bilo dobro za hlađenje, kao što zajedničko ulje nije bilo dobro ni za motor, ni za mjenjač, u ostalome to je bio genijalan koncept.
U same kutove postavljeni su minijaturni kotači od 10 cola, a umjesto klasičnog ogibljenja, ugrađene su gumene kugle (gumielastic), koje su zauzimale malo prostora. Podnica je oslobođena kardanskog vratila te se sav prostor mogao ostaviti putnicima. Zbog toga je bio neočekivano prostran za četiri osobe, a moglo ih se ugurati i pet.
Tako je nastao jedan od najgenijalnijih automobila ikad konstruiranih, a prvi serijski modeli nosili su nazive Austin Seven i Morris Mini Minor. Prva se verzija pokretala motorom obujma 848 ccm i snage 34 KS pri 5500/min, što je bilo dovoljno za brzinu od 116 km/h. Za to su vrijeme bile to vrlo dobre performanse, a naknadno je stigla najuspješnija verzija 1000 s motorom snage 42 KS, a potom i 1275 ccm.
Mini kao hit
Uspjeh je bio iznad svih očekivanja. Mini je bio hit na većini europskih tržišta, posebice u Italiji, pa je pokrenuta licencna proizvodnja u Innocentiju. Postao je automobilska ikona i genijalno vozilo za grad, koje je preokrenulo razvoj gradskih automobila. Prema njegovoj poboljšanoj koncepciji, 1969. je napravljen Autobianchi A112, prethodnica Fiata 127 i Yuga 45.
Mini je bio uzor i prvom Golfu iz 1974., za dva broja manjem od sadašnjeg, a ostalo je povijest. Mini se u desetak verzija proizvodio sve do 2000. te je ukupno napravljeno 5.378.776 primjeraka. Nakon što je BMW kupio Rover, 2001. je uspješno uveden suvremeni nasljednik. Potom je BMW prodao i Rover i Land Rover, a u svom vlasništvu ostavio jedino novog Minija.
Četiri karoserijske verzije
Oduševljeni kupci tražili su dorađene verzije, pa je napravljen karavanski model Morris Mini Traveller, odnosno Austin Mini Countryman. Na njegovoj je osnovi napravljen maleni i iznenađujuće uspješni dostavnjak, sa zatvorenim stražnjim dijelom, i pickup - Van.
Mini se montirao i u Španjolskoj, Portugalu, Belgiji, Južnoj Africi, Australiji, Novom Zelandu, Urugvaju, Venezueli… Na cestama je još više od deset tisuća primjeraka, dvadesetak na dalmatinskim cestama.
