Tim iz Caladan Oceanica krenuo je na ekspediciju na Filipinsko more početkom 2021. u potrazi za USS Johnston, brodom iz Drugog svjetskog rata koji je potonuo 1944. tijekom bitke kod zaljeva Leyte.

Koristeći podmornicu DSV Limiting Factor s ljudskom posadom (isti tip podmornice kojom je istraživač Viktor Veskovo sletio na dno Marijanskog rova ​​u lipnju 2020.), znanstvenici su snimili zaron na dno Filipinskog rova, gdje su radili više od četiri sata.

Pregledavajući snimke koje je ekspedicija napravila na morskom dnu, istraživač morske dubine Alan Jamison sa Sveučilišta zapadne Australije primijetio je čudnu sjenu. Video i fotografije poslao je Mikeu Vecchioneu, zoologu sa Smithsonian Institutiona. A prema obrisima stvorenja, znanstvenik je zaključio da je riječ o lignji iz roda Magnapinna.

Plivala je 6,2 km ispod površine mora, što je čini lignjom koja je snimljena na najdubljem mjestu ikad. Dosadašnji rekorder, također iz roda Magnapinna, viđen je na dubini od oko 4,7 km.

Istraživači su također pronašli četiri grimpoteuthys hobotnice (dambo hobotnice), ali su prethodno zabilježene na sličnim dubinama.

"Ovo je ronjenje pokazalo da nekoliko vrsta glavonožaca može živjeti u gornjim dijelovima ovih zaista dubokih oceanskih rovova", rekao je Michael Vecchione.

Iako je dubokomorsko vozilo bilo na određenoj udaljenosti od lignje, što je utjecalo na kvalitetu dobivenih slika, istraživači su ipak uspjeli uočiti nekoliko važnih karakteristika za identifikaciju. Lignje Magnapinna karakteriziraju vrlo tanki pipci, kao i karakteristično držanje tijekom plivanja. Ovaj primjerak nije bio duži od 10 centimetara, pa su istraživači zaključili da se radi o mladoj lignji.

Pronađen je i potopljeni brod - istraživači su proveli nekoliko sati proučavajući i mapirajući ostatke 114 metara dugog plovila. Viktor Veskovo, umirovljeni pomorski časnik i podvodni istraživač koji je vodio ekspediciju, govorio je o izazovima.

"Olupina na velikoj dubini nalazi se na mjestu gdje ima malo kisika, a iako je malo zagađenja od morskog svijeta, iznenađujuće je dobro očuvana, osim štete koja je nastala tijekom borbe", rekao je Veskovo.

Brod je postao poznat po svojoj hrabrosti u akciji tijekom bitke kod zaljeva Ley. USS Johnston je vodio nekoliko američkih brodova protiv kolosalne flote dok nije bio opkoljen i uništen.

Tim iz Caladan Oceanica krenuo je na ekspediciju na Filipinsko more početkom 2021. u potrazi za USS Johnston, brodom iz Drugog svjetskog rata koji je potonuo 1944. tijekom bitke kod zaljeva Leyte.

Koristeći podmornicu DSV Limiting Factor s ljudskom posadom (isti tip podmornice kojom je istraživač Viktor Veskovo sletio na dno Marijanskog rova ​​u lipnju 2020.), znanstvenici su snimili zaron na dno Filipinskog rova, gdje su radili više od četiri sata.

Pregledavajući snimke koje je ekspedicija napravila na morskom dnu, istraživač morske dubine Alan Jamison sa Sveučilišta zapadne Australije primijetio je čudnu sjenu. Video i fotografije poslao je Mikeu Vecchioneu, zoologu sa Smithsonian Institutiona. A prema obrisima stvorenja, znanstvenik je zaključio da je riječ o lignji iz roda Magnapinna.

Plivala je 6,2 km ispod površine mora, što je čini lignjom koja je snimljena na najdubljem mjestu ikad. Dosadašnji rekorder, također iz roda Magnapinna, viđen je na dubini od oko 4,7 km.

Istraživači su također pronašli četiri grimpoteuthys hobotnice (dambo hobotnice), ali su prethodno zabilježene na sličnim dubinama.

"Ovo je ronjenje pokazalo da nekoliko vrsta glavonožaca može živjeti u gornjim dijelovima ovih zaista dubokih oceanskih rovova", rekao je Michael Vecchione.

Iako je dubokomorsko vozilo bilo na određenoj udaljenosti od lignje, što je utjecalo na kvalitetu dobivenih slika, istraživači su ipak uspjeli uočiti nekoliko važnih karakteristika za identifikaciju. Lignje Magnapinna karakteriziraju vrlo tanki pipci, kao i karakteristično držanje tijekom plivanja. Ovaj primjerak nije bio duži od 10 centimetara, pa su istraživači zaključili da se radi o mladoj lignji.

Pronađen je i potopljeni brod - istraživači su proveli nekoliko sati proučavajući i mapirajući ostatke 114 metara dugog plovila. Viktor Veskovo, umirovljeni pomorski časnik i podvodni istraživač koji je vodio ekspediciju, govorio je o izazovima.

"Olupina na velikoj dubini nalazi se na mjestu gdje ima malo kisika, a iako je malo zagađenja od morskog svijeta, iznenađujuće je dobro očuvana, osim štete koja je nastala tijekom borbe", rekao je Veskovo.

Brod je postao poznat po svojoj hrabrosti u akciji tijekom bitke kod zaljeva Ley. USS Johnston je vodio nekoliko američkih brodova protiv kolosalne flote dok nije bio opkoljen i uništen.
