Ptice ljeta odletjele su iz Kolumbije u Ameriku. Kolumbijski redatelj Ciro Guerra, čije smo odlične "Ptice ljeta" nedavno gledali na Festivalu mediteranskog filma Split, vrlo solidno je debitirao na engleskom jeziku i u američkoj produkciji s dramom "Čekajući barbare".

Guerra je za ekranizaciju romana J.M. Coetzeea dobio vidno veći budžet u odnosu na "Birds Of Passage" i "Embrace Of The Serpent". Dobio je i zvučnu glumačku ekipu sačinjenu od jednog oskarovca (Mark Rylance, "Most špijuna") i dvojice superstarova (Johnny Depp, Robert Pattinson).

"Waiting for The Barbarians" nije nastao u okviru hollywoodskog "major" studija, ali sigurno je bilo producentskih pritisaka da Kolumbijčev američki prvijenac bude akcijskiji ili barem komercijalniji, a ne festivalskiji i umjetničkiji.

Srećom, Guerra je uspio povezati suprotne polove, ostaviti referenciju na Beckettov egzistencijalizam u naslovu (Barbari kao Godot) i snimiti pustinjski predratni film koji je bliži "Čaju u Sahari" Bernarda Bertoluccija i "Lawrenceu od Arabije" Davida Leana nego "Umrli su u čizmama" i "Legionaru".

Uspio je i ukrotiti Deppa. Kontroverzni glumac za promjenu nastupa bez neke maske u ulozi torturi sklonog policijskog pukovnika Jolla, premda nije mogao odoljeti da ne stavi neobične naočale na glavu kako bi njegov lik djelovao jezovitije. "Štite oči od sunčeva bljeska", objašnjava Joll kad dođe u posjet predstraži pod vodstvom Poglavarstvenika (Rylance), lociranoj na samom rubu neimenovanog Europskog carstva.

Prema svemu sudeći radi se o 19-stoljetnom Britanskom carstvu koje bi se, smatra Joll, moglo naći pod skorom invazijom Barbara. Poglavarstvenik tako ne misli, štoviše radije pomaže Barbarima, ustvari Nomadima, svjestan da ih je Carstvo zakinulo i okupiralo njihovu zemlju, nego da ih zatvara i kažnjava, a naročito je slab prema slijepoj djevojci (Gana Bayarsaikhan).

Sukob različitih svjetonazora je neizbježan, Poglavarstvenikovog mirnodopskog i Jollovog nasilnog. "Strpljivost i pritisak, samo se tako može doći do istine", drži sadistički Joll, pripravan mučiti nomade ne bi li doznao informacije o navodnom naoružavanju Barbara i spremanju za veliki rat protiv Carstva.

Jasno je da je naslov filma alegoričan, odnosno da Barbari nisu Nomadi, nego kolonizatori Britanci, pri čemu je Poglavarstvenik iznimka. Nije dosta što su im već oduzeli dio zemlje; sada traže povod da to nastave raditi. "Imali smo mir dok se došljaci nisu počeli miješati", Poglavarstvenik veli pridošlici Jollu koji "kvari ljude" i veći je neprijatelj od Barbara.

Središnji dio filma je najviše što se "Čekajući Barbare" približava veličanstvenoj "leanovskoj" pustinjskoj avanturi, kad Joll ode kući, a Poglavarstvenik odluči vratiti slijepu djevojku njezinom plemenu. Prilika je to da se direktor fotografije Chris Menges vrati u dane kad je snimao epske drame "Polja smrti" ili "Misiju" i pokuša dosegnuti pustinjsku metafiziku Leanova snimatelja Freddieja Younga ("Lawrence of Arabia").

Ipak, prava drama filma slijedi kad se Poglavarstvenik vrati u predstražu i biva proglašen izdajnikom zbog druženja s neprijateljima od strane Jolla i časnika Mandela (Pattinson). U tom momentu Poglavarstvenik postaje svojevrsni Isus koji će javno biti brutalno ponižen, kažnjen i mučen u bijeloj opravi poprskanoj krvlju.

"Isusolike" odlike Poglavarstvenik je već pokazao kad je prao noge slijepe djevojke, no simbolika i alegorija je sve jasnija kad film dosegne dramski vrhunac, a Rylance snažnom suptilnom, sućutnom glumom podsjeća zašto je dobio Oscara.

Iako se povijest i dalje trudi da priča bude dovoljno relevantna i u sadašnjosti, "Waiting For The Barbarians" bio vjerojatno moćniji i relevantniji komad drame da je snimljen na vrhuncu takozvanog "rata protiv terora", odnosno američke okupacije pustinjskog Iraka i Afganistana.

No, tko zna bi li se tada – oprez: "spoiler" – redatelj usudio završiti film sugestijom da bi se Carstvo moglo naći u nemilosti Barbara koje su sami stvorili. Čekanju je došao kraj. Na horizontu se podiže oblak prašine od jahača na konjima. Barbari su dočekani.

Svi protiv Deppa, ali ne i Burton

Iako je Depp za mnoge u Hollywoodu postao "persona non grata" i dobio otkaz na snimanju trećeg dijela serijala "Čudovišne zvijeri", na njegovoj je strani Tim Burton koji ga je opet angažirao na za jeda svoj projekt – novu, serijsku verziju "Obitelji Addams".

Ptice ljeta odletjele su iz Kolumbije u Ameriku. Kolumbijski redatelj Ciro Guerra, čije smo odlične "Ptice ljeta" nedavno gledali na Festivalu mediteranskog filma Split, vrlo solidno je debitirao na engleskom jeziku i u američkoj produkciji s dramom "Čekajući barbare".

Guerra je za ekranizaciju romana J.M. Coetzeea dobio vidno veći budžet u odnosu na "Birds Of Passage" i "Embrace Of The Serpent". Dobio je i zvučnu glumačku ekipu sačinjenu od jednog oskarovca (Mark Rylance, "Most špijuna") i dvojice superstarova (Johnny Depp, Robert Pattinson).

"Waiting for The Barbarians" nije nastao u okviru hollywoodskog "major" studija, ali sigurno je bilo producentskih pritisaka da Kolumbijčev američki prvijenac bude akcijskiji ili barem komercijalniji, a ne festivalskiji i umjetničkiji.

Srećom, Guerra je uspio povezati suprotne polove, ostaviti referenciju na Beckettov egzistencijalizam u naslovu (Barbari kao Godot) i snimiti pustinjski predratni film koji je bliži "Čaju u Sahari" Bernarda Bertoluccija i "Lawrenceu od Arabije" Davida Leana nego "Umrli su u čizmama" i "Legionaru".

Uspio je i ukrotiti Deppa. Kontroverzni glumac za promjenu nastupa bez neke maske u ulozi torturi sklonog policijskog pukovnika Jolla, premda nije mogao odoljeti da ne stavi neobične naočale na glavu kako bi njegov lik djelovao jezovitije. "Štite oči od sunčeva bljeska", objašnjava Joll kad dođe u posjet predstraži pod vodstvom Poglavarstvenika (Rylance), lociranoj na samom rubu neimenovanog Europskog carstva.

Prema svemu sudeći radi se o 19-stoljetnom Britanskom carstvu koje bi se, smatra Joll, moglo naći pod skorom invazijom Barbara. Poglavarstvenik tako ne misli, štoviše radije pomaže Barbarima, ustvari Nomadima, svjestan da ih je Carstvo zakinulo i okupiralo njihovu zemlju, nego da ih zatvara i kažnjava, a naročito je slab prema slijepoj djevojci (Gana Bayarsaikhan).

Sukob različitih svjetonazora je neizbježan, Poglavarstvenikovog mirnodopskog i Jollovog nasilnog. "Strpljivost i pritisak, samo se tako može doći do istine", drži sadistički Joll, pripravan mučiti nomade ne bi li doznao informacije o navodnom naoružavanju Barbara i spremanju za veliki rat protiv Carstva.

Jasno je da je naslov filma alegoričan, odnosno da Barbari nisu Nomadi, nego kolonizatori Britanci, pri čemu je Poglavarstvenik iznimka. Nije dosta što su im već oduzeli dio zemlje; sada traže povod da to nastave raditi. "Imali smo mir dok se došljaci nisu počeli miješati", Poglavarstvenik veli pridošlici Jollu koji "kvari ljude" i veći je neprijatelj od Barbara.

Središnji dio filma je najviše što se "Čekajući Barbare" približava veličanstvenoj "leanovskoj" pustinjskoj avanturi, kad Joll ode kući, a Poglavarstvenik odluči vratiti slijepu djevojku njezinom plemenu. Prilika je to da se direktor fotografije Chris Menges vrati u dane kad je snimao epske drame "Polja smrti" ili "Misiju" i pokuša dosegnuti pustinjsku metafiziku Leanova snimatelja Freddieja Younga ("Lawrence of Arabia").

Ipak, prava drama filma slijedi kad se Poglavarstvenik vrati u predstražu i biva proglašen izdajnikom zbog druženja s neprijateljima od strane Jolla i časnika Mandela (Pattinson). U tom momentu Poglavarstvenik postaje svojevrsni Isus koji će javno biti brutalno ponižen, kažnjen i mučen u bijeloj opravi poprskanoj krvlju.

"Isusolike" odlike Poglavarstvenik je već pokazao kad je prao noge slijepe djevojke, no simbolika i alegorija je sve jasnija kad film dosegne dramski vrhunac, a Rylance snažnom suptilnom, sućutnom glumom podsjeća zašto je dobio Oscara.

Iako se povijest i dalje trudi da priča bude dovoljno relevantna i u sadašnjosti, "Waiting For The Barbarians" bio vjerojatno moćniji i relevantniji komad drame da je snimljen na vrhuncu takozvanog "rata protiv terora", odnosno američke okupacije pustinjskog Iraka i Afganistana.

No, tko zna bi li se tada – oprez: "spoiler" – redatelj usudio završiti film sugestijom da bi se Carstvo moglo naći u nemilosti Barbara koje su sami stvorili. Čekanju je došao kraj. Na horizontu se podiže oblak prašine od jahača na konjima. Barbari su dočekani.

Svi protiv Deppa, ali ne i Burton

Iako je Depp za mnoge u Hollywoodu postao "persona non grata" i dobio otkaz na snimanju trećeg dijela serijala "Čudovišne zvijeri", na njegovoj je strani Tim Burton koji ga je opet angažirao na za jeda svoj projekt – novu, serijsku verziju "Obitelji Addams".
