U kaotičnim zadnjim danima ere Donalda Trumpa neočekivano je kao „faktor stabilnosti” američkog društva iskočio potpredsjednik SAD-a Mike Pence, koji je odbio poslušati Trumpov zahtjev da poništi pobjedu Joea Bidena.

Sada već slavnom sjednicom američkog Kongresa od 6. siječnja – zbog nasilnog upada Trumpovih pristaša u Capitol prekinutom na više sati – predsjedavao je upravo Pence. Evakuiran i od strane tajne službe odveden „na sigurnu lokaciju”, nije gubio živce: čim se situacija oko Capitola raščistila, pozvao je kongresmene da se vrate na sjednicu i potvrde Bidenovu elektorsku pobjedu.

Uoči same sjednice Pence se nalazio u neugodnom položaju, jer ga je Trump nagovarao da iskoristi predsjedavateljske ovlasti i ospori, odnosno ne prihvati i(li) poništi elektorske rezultate. Pence se tom pritisku othrvao, spasivši američku demokraciju. Da je postupio po Trumpovu nalogu, Amerika bi upala u dosad nepoznati politički vakuum, s nesagledivim posljedicama.

Samo koji dan kasnije Pence je pokazao da ipak ne želi cipelariti poraženog šefa na odlasku. Odbio je zahtjev Demokrata da kao potpredsjednik SAD-a aktivira 25. ustavni amandman, kojim bi smijenio Trumpa s dužnosti.

„Ne vjerujem da je takav potez u najboljem interesu naše nacije ni u suglasju s našim Ustavom. Taj amandman ne bi smio biti korišten za kažnjavanje ili uzurpaciju”, obrazložio je Pence.

Tko je, ukratko, taj čovjek?

Razočarao staru majku

Ovaj 62-godišnji republikanac (r. 1959.) iz desnog krila stranke, prepoznatljiv po posve bijeloj kosi, rođen je i odrastao u Columbusu u državi Indiana, u obitelji njemačko-irskog porijekla. Zanimljivo je da je u djetinjstvu i ranoj mladosti bio demokrat i rimokatolik, kao i ostatak njegove obitelji.

Kao 17-godišnjak je 1976. volontirao u Demokratskoj stranci okruga Bartholomew. Nakon što stječe pravo glasa, na svojim prvim izborima 1980. glasa za demokratskog predsjedničkog kandidata Jimmyja Cartera (koji je izgubio od republikanca Ronalda Reagana). Kasnije će priznati da su ga na politički angažman izvorno nadahnuli ljudi kao John F. Kennedy, demokratski predsjednik Amerike i dosad jedini katolik među stanarima Bijele kuće (drugi će biti Joe Biden).

Pence se politički promijenio na studiju (diplomirao je pravo na Sveučilištu Indiana). U to vrijeme napušta Katoličku crkvu i postaje evangelički protestant, kako ističu njegove biografije, „na veliko razočaranje svoje majke”. Tada se njegovi politički stavovi pomiču udesno, što će Pence kasnije pripisati „zdravorazumskom konzervativizmu Ronalda Reagana”.

Nakon što 1986. diplomira, neko vrijeme drži privatnu odvjetničku praksu. Iz tog razdoblja datiraju njegova dva neuspješna pokušaja da uđe u Kongres – 1988. i 1990. godine. U devedesetima se prebacuje na medije: od 1994. do 1999. voditelj je konzervativnih emisija na radiju i televiziji.

Političku karijeru započinje 2000., kada je prvi put izabran u Zastupnički dom SAD-a, što će ponoviti na idućih pet izbora: sve do 2013. republikanski je zastupnik 2. i 6. kongresnog okruga Indiane, a 2013. postaje guverner Indiane. Sebe opisuje kao „načelnog konzervativca” i pristašu pokreta Tea Party, tvrdeći da je „kršćanin, konzervativac i republikanac, tim redom”.

Sukob s LGBT zajednicom

Kao guverner Indiane protivi se i istospolnom braku i civilnom partnerstvu, te dolazi u sukob s LGBT zajednicom, osobito nakon što je potpisao zakone o ograničenju pobačaja (uključujući i zakon koji zabranjuje pobačaj ako je razlog postupka rasa, spol ili invalidnost fetusa), odnosno nakon što je potpisao Zakon o obnovi vjerske slobode (RFRA), čime je izazvao žestoki otpor umjerenih republikanaca, liberala, poslovne i LGBT zajednice, koji su smatrali da takav zakon o vjerskim slobodama zadire u prava LGBT osoba i omogućava diskriminaciju seksualnih manjinaca.

Nakon te žestoke reakcije Pence je reterirao i revidirao spomenuti zakon, uvevši odredbe o zabrani diskriminacije na temelju seksualne orijentacije, rodnog identiteta i drugih kriterija.

No „repovi” tog sukoba još traju. Kad je u ožujku 2019. Joe Biden u govoru na Sveučilištu Nebraska Omaha nazvao Pencea „pristojnim momkom”, napale su ga mnoge javne osobe, progresivni političari i LGBT skupine, a kandidatkinja za guvernera New Yorka, glumica Cynthia Nixon (poznata po ulozi Mirande u TV seriji „Seks i grad”) oštro ga je kritizirala u listu The Washington Post.

Nixon je tada nazvala Pencea „podmuklim i opasnim” zbog njegovih postupaka prema LGBT pravima, dok je Bidenu poručila da je „lako reći lijepe stvari o Penceu kad vam osobno ne prijeti njegova agenda. Da je Biden izravno napadnut na isti način na koji je i naša zajednica, mislim da bi Pencea vidio iz sasvim drukčije točke gledišta.”

Potom se budući predsjednik SAD-a Joe Biden ispričao, osudivši Penceov stav o LGBT pravima.

U kaotičnim zadnjim danima ere Donalda Trumpa neočekivano je kao „faktor stabilnosti” američkog društva iskočio potpredsjednik SAD-a Mike Pence, koji je odbio poslušati Trumpov zahtjev da poništi pobjedu Joea Bidena.

Sada već slavnom sjednicom američkog Kongresa od 6. siječnja – zbog nasilnog upada Trumpovih pristaša u Capitol prekinutom na više sati – predsjedavao je upravo Pence. Evakuiran i od strane tajne službe odveden „na sigurnu lokaciju”, nije gubio živce: čim se situacija oko Capitola raščistila, pozvao je kongresmene da se vrate na sjednicu i potvrde Bidenovu elektorsku pobjedu.

Uoči same sjednice Pence se nalazio u neugodnom položaju, jer ga je Trump nagovarao da iskoristi predsjedavateljske ovlasti i ospori, odnosno ne prihvati i(li) poništi elektorske rezultate. Pence se tom pritisku othrvao, spasivši američku demokraciju. Da je postupio po Trumpovu nalogu, Amerika bi upala u dosad nepoznati politički vakuum, s nesagledivim posljedicama.

Samo koji dan kasnije Pence je pokazao da ipak ne želi cipelariti poraženog šefa na odlasku. Odbio je zahtjev Demokrata da kao potpredsjednik SAD-a aktivira 25. ustavni amandman, kojim bi smijenio Trumpa s dužnosti.

„Ne vjerujem da je takav potez u najboljem interesu naše nacije ni u suglasju s našim Ustavom. Taj amandman ne bi smio biti korišten za kažnjavanje ili uzurpaciju”, obrazložio je Pence.

Tko je, ukratko, taj čovjek?

Razočarao staru majku

Ovaj 62-godišnji republikanac (r. 1959.) iz desnog krila stranke, prepoznatljiv po posve bijeloj kosi, rođen je i odrastao u Columbusu u državi Indiana, u obitelji njemačko-irskog porijekla. Zanimljivo je da je u djetinjstvu i ranoj mladosti bio demokrat i rimokatolik, kao i ostatak njegove obitelji.

Kao 17-godišnjak je 1976. volontirao u Demokratskoj stranci okruga Bartholomew. Nakon što stječe pravo glasa, na svojim prvim izborima 1980. glasa za demokratskog predsjedničkog kandidata Jimmyja Cartera (koji je izgubio od republikanca Ronalda Reagana). Kasnije će priznati da su ga na politički angažman izvorno nadahnuli ljudi kao John F. Kennedy, demokratski predsjednik Amerike i dosad jedini katolik među stanarima Bijele kuće (drugi će biti Joe Biden).

Pence se politički promijenio na studiju (diplomirao je pravo na Sveučilištu Indiana). U to vrijeme napušta Katoličku crkvu i postaje evangelički protestant, kako ističu njegove biografije, „na veliko razočaranje svoje majke”. Tada se njegovi politički stavovi pomiču udesno, što će Pence kasnije pripisati „zdravorazumskom konzervativizmu Ronalda Reagana”.

Nakon što 1986. diplomira, neko vrijeme drži privatnu odvjetničku praksu. Iz tog razdoblja datiraju njegova dva neuspješna pokušaja da uđe u Kongres – 1988. i 1990. godine. U devedesetima se prebacuje na medije: od 1994. do 1999. voditelj je konzervativnih emisija na radiju i televiziji.

Političku karijeru započinje 2000., kada je prvi put izabran u Zastupnički dom SAD-a, što će ponoviti na idućih pet izbora: sve do 2013. republikanski je zastupnik 2. i 6. kongresnog okruga Indiane, a 2013. postaje guverner Indiane. Sebe opisuje kao „načelnog konzervativca” i pristašu pokreta Tea Party, tvrdeći da je „kršćanin, konzervativac i republikanac, tim redom”.

Sukob s LGBT zajednicom

Kao guverner Indiane protivi se i istospolnom braku i civilnom partnerstvu, te dolazi u sukob s LGBT zajednicom, osobito nakon što je potpisao zakone o ograničenju pobačaja (uključujući i zakon koji zabranjuje pobačaj ako je razlog postupka rasa, spol ili invalidnost fetusa), odnosno nakon što je potpisao Zakon o obnovi vjerske slobode (RFRA), čime je izazvao žestoki otpor umjerenih republikanaca, liberala, poslovne i LGBT zajednice, koji su smatrali da takav zakon o vjerskim slobodama zadire u prava LGBT osoba i omogućava diskriminaciju seksualnih manjinaca.

Nakon te žestoke reakcije Pence je reterirao i revidirao spomenuti zakon, uvevši odredbe o zabrani diskriminacije na temelju seksualne orijentacije, rodnog identiteta i drugih kriterija.

No „repovi” tog sukoba još traju. Kad je u ožujku 2019. Joe Biden u govoru na Sveučilištu Nebraska Omaha nazvao Pencea „pristojnim momkom”, napale su ga mnoge javne osobe, progresivni političari i LGBT skupine, a kandidatkinja za guvernera New Yorka, glumica Cynthia Nixon (poznata po ulozi Mirande u TV seriji „Seks i grad”) oštro ga je kritizirala u listu The Washington Post.

Nixon je tada nazvala Pencea „podmuklim i opasnim” zbog njegovih postupaka prema LGBT pravima, dok je Bidenu poručila da je „lako reći lijepe stvari o Penceu kad vam osobno ne prijeti njegova agenda. Da je Biden izravno napadnut na isti način na koji je i naša zajednica, mislim da bi Pencea vidio iz sasvim drukčije točke gledišta.”

Potom se budući predsjednik SAD-a Joe Biden ispričao, osudivši Penceov stav o LGBT pravima.
