Otok Kefalonija je najveći otok Jonskog mora, koji je pored svojih prelijepih plaža poseban i po rijetkom fenomenu koji se bez izuzetka odvija svakog 15. kolovoza u seoskoj crkvi.

Svake godine na praznik Velike Gospe u crkvu Gospe Fiduse pristiže na stotine zmija. Prema tvrdnjama mještana one obično dolaze dan ili dva pred praznik i ostaju u crkvi sve dok se ne odsluži liturgija. Sa završetkom liturgije zmije odlaze svaka na svoju stranu.

Nije poznato kada su se zmije prvi put pojavile u crkvi, ali stanovnici otoka raspredaju priče koje sežu duboko u prošlost. Prema njihovim tvrdnjama, čak i kada su Grci prešli na novi kalendar, koji je pomaknut za trinaest dana unaprijed - zmije su ispoštovale stari kalendar i pojavile se 15. kolovoza, piše National Geographic.

Pored ove priče, postoji i lokalna legenda koja opisuje zbog čega je došlo do ovog fenomena. Legenda kaže da su pirati u XIII. vijeku zauzeli otok i pokušali provaliti u samostan pun redovnica. Kako priča dalje govori, u tom trenutku su se pojavile zmije koje su ispreplele tijela i formirale zid između pirata i samostana. Prestrašeni prizorom, pirati su podigli jedra i pobjegli.

Jedna verzija čak navodi da su redovnice u strahu pred najezdom gusara i njihovih zločina zamolile Boga da ih pretvori u zmije. Njihove molitve su, prema legendi, uslišane i na taj način su one spašene. Od tada dolaze ovdje obilježiti praznik po kojem je crkva i dobila ime.

Prema riječima očevidaca i stanovnika ovog i okolnih mjesta zmije su malih dimenzija - ne duže od jednog metra i sive su boje. Ono što ih karakterizira je da se ne boje ljudi. Pojavljuju se svake godine u približno isto vrijeme i to najviše oko ikone Bogorodice.

U novije vreme, lokalci i svećenici za njih su napravili staklene sanduke u koje ih sklanjaju zbog sigurnosti. Po završetku liturgije, svećenici vade zmije i vjernici ih mogu dodirnuti, a ovaj čin se smatra vrstom blagoslova.

Zabilježeni su običaji kada ih ljudi stavljaju na glavu i dopuštaju im da puze po njihovom tijelu jer smatraju da će im one donijeti sreću. Inače njihovo grčko ime je agiofide, "svete zmije".

Grci bilježe da se, otkako prate ovaj fenomen, zmije nisu pojavile samo dva puta. Prvi put - 1941. godine prije okupacije u Drugom svetskom ratu i drugi put - 1953. godine kada je Kefaloniju pogodio razorni potres. Stoga, mnogi od njih smatraju da ako se zmije ne pojave - te godine mogu očekivati neki nesretan događaj. Ovaj fenomen je toliko popularan u Grčkoj da ga prate brojni mediji, piše National Geographic.

Otok Kefalonija je najveći otok Jonskog mora, koji je pored svojih prelijepih plaža poseban i po rijetkom fenomenu koji se bez izuzetka odvija svakog 15. kolovoza u seoskoj crkvi.

Svake godine na praznik Velike Gospe u crkvu Gospe Fiduse pristiže na stotine zmija. Prema tvrdnjama mještana one obično dolaze dan ili dva pred praznik i ostaju u crkvi sve dok se ne odsluži liturgija. Sa završetkom liturgije zmije odlaze svaka na svoju stranu.

Nije poznato kada su se zmije prvi put pojavile u crkvi, ali stanovnici otoka raspredaju priče koje sežu duboko u prošlost. Prema njihovim tvrdnjama, čak i kada su Grci prešli na novi kalendar, koji je pomaknut za trinaest dana unaprijed - zmije su ispoštovale stari kalendar i pojavile se 15. kolovoza, piše National Geographic.

Pored ove priče, postoji i lokalna legenda koja opisuje zbog čega je došlo do ovog fenomena. Legenda kaže da su pirati u XIII. vijeku zauzeli otok i pokušali provaliti u samostan pun redovnica. Kako priča dalje govori, u tom trenutku su se pojavile zmije koje su ispreplele tijela i formirale zid između pirata i samostana. Prestrašeni prizorom, pirati su podigli jedra i pobjegli.

Jedna verzija čak navodi da su redovnice u strahu pred najezdom gusara i njihovih zločina zamolile Boga da ih pretvori u zmije. Njihove molitve su, prema legendi, uslišane i na taj način su one spašene. Od tada dolaze ovdje obilježiti praznik po kojem je crkva i dobila ime.

U novije vreme, lokalci i svećenici za njih su napravili staklene sanduke u koje ih sklanjaju zbog sigurnosti. Po završetku liturgije, svećenici vade zmije i vjernici ih mogu dodirnuti, a ovaj čin se smatra vrstom blagoslova.

Zabilježeni su običaji kada ih ljudi stavljaju na glavu i dopuštaju im da puze po njihovom tijelu jer smatraju da će im one donijeti sreću. Inače njihovo grčko ime je agiofide, "svete zmije".

Grci bilježe da se, otkako prate ovaj fenomen, zmije nisu pojavile samo dva puta. Prvi put - 1941. godine prije okupacije u Drugom svetskom ratu i drugi put - 1953. godine kada je Kefaloniju pogodio razorni potres. Stoga, mnogi od njih smatraju da ako se zmije ne pojave - te godine mogu očekivati neki nesretan događaj. Ovaj fenomen je toliko popularan u Grčkoj da ga prate brojni mediji, piše National Geographic.
