"Pališ se na sve kinesko, lud si za Kinezima", zavitlavaju policajci novog “bijelog” kolegu Dannyja Wallacea (Mark Wahlberg) kad bude dodijeljen u dominantno azijsku policijsku postaju u newyorškom Chinatownu, gdje će postati dio “Asian Gang Unit” odreda i partnerski se spariti s veteranom Nickom Chenom (Chow Yun-Fat). Zezancija iz “Potkupljivača” (“The Corruptor”, 1999.) odražava ozbiljnu hollywoodsku zaluđenost azijskim filmašima i zvijezdama u devedesetim godinama prošlog stoljaća.

Najprije je u Hollywood, na nagovor Van Dammea, stigao John Woo i tamo režirao nisku akcijskih filmova poput “Teške mete”, “Slomljene strijele” i “Čovjeka bez lica”. Za njim su, također zavaljujući Van Dammeu, došli Ringo Lam (“Najveći rizik”) i Tsui Hark (“Dream Team”, “Pakleni udar”), a potom i glumci Jackie Chan (“Gas do daske”) i Jet Li (“Smrtonosno oružje 4”). Bilo je očekivano da će stići i Yun-Fat, velika azijska zvijezda, akcijska ikona i kućni glumac Wooa (“Žestoki policajac”).

Yun-Fat je ostvario hollywoodski debi 1998. pored oskarovke Mire Sorvino u “Elitnim ubojicama” Antoinea Fuque koji je vješto kopirao stil Wooa kao i vršnjački “Veliki pogodak”, američki prvijenac Che-Kirka Wonga sa, zanimljivo, Wahlbergom u glavnoj ulozi. “Potkupljivač” je bio Yun-Fatov drugi hollywoodski film i glumac je bio znatno opušteniji i osjećao se udobnije pred kamerom američkog redatelja, gotovo kao kod Wooa, potvrđujući titulu kulerskog hongkonškog Alaina Delona.

Pa ipak, “The Corruptor” je samo naizgled bio stilizirana hongkonška “shoot ‘em up” akcija po mjeri Wooa prebačena u američki milje, kao “The Replacement Killers”. Film počinje s blockbusterskim praskom (podmetanje bombe u Kineskoj četvrti), negativcima snimljenim iz donjeg rakursa i pucačinom ovjekovječenom i u usporenom pokretu.

Međutim, kako “Potkupljivač” ide dalje, jasno je da redatelju Jamesu Foleyju (“Bliska meta”, “Kad padne mrak, ljubavi moja”, “Glengarry Glen Ross”, “Komora”) nije samo do akcijskog kopiranja Wooa kao Fuqui ili snimanja “Gasa do daske 2” i “Smrtonosnog oružja 5”, neovisno o tome što Kim Chan opet glumi lika zvanog Uncle Benny kao u “Lethal Weapon 4”.

Specijaliziran za krimi drame s temom morala i karakterne studije, Foley odbija snimiti jeftin akcić i prodati ga kao nešto skupo. Ima jedna rečenica u filmu kad kineski mafijaš Henry Lee (Ric Young; “Posljednji kineski car”) govori Chenu kako “izrada ručnog sata košta jedan dolar, a neki ga kupuju za 100 i precijenjuju njegovu vrijednost”.

Foley ne želi nešto tako, ali i koristi Leejev savjet Chenu “Nemoj precijeniti svoju vrijednost”. Redatelj kao da se drži filozofije Prljavog Harryja iz drugog dijela njegovog serijala “Čovjek mora znati svoje limite”. Naime, Foley zna da nije akcijski kalibar jednog Wooa, stoga ne stavlja akciju u prvi plan filma, iako je režirana više nego korektno.

Likovi policajaca i dijalozi njegov su forte s obligatornim klišejima “buddy cop” akcića (“Kao Cagney i Lacey”, veli Chen). No, Foley u tom smislu ne zalazi na teren akcijske komedije a la “Rush Hour”, već policajce pokušava načiniti nešto slojevitijima, od Chena do Wallacea kao sina osramoćena policajca (Brian Cox).

Jednako tako, Foley nastoji približiti zbivanja (akcijskom) krimiću sedamdesetih na tragu “Francuske veze” s ponekim “twistom” karakterističnim za devedesete, makar “Potkupljivač” ne ide toliko daleko kao “Privedite osumnjičene” ili “Šesto čulo”. U Foleyjevu filmu podjednako se puca i priča, nema puno više “slow motiona” negoli u prosječnom američkom akciću devedesetih, a dogođajnost je ovjekovječena i kamerom iz ruke kao kod Sidneyja Lumeta i njegovih urbanih uličnih klasika sedamdesetih s Alom Pacinom (“Serpico”, “Pasje popodne”).

Korupcija u policiji i “good cop-bad cop” nijanse dobra i zla, morala i nemorala, intrigiraju Foleyja koji ubacuje u igru motiv izdaje, FBI i Unutarnju kontrolu, dajući filmu dašak kriminalističko-dramske kompleksnosti. Povremeno se ne zna kojoj su strani likovi naklonjeni, policiji ili mafiji s vezama u policiji, dok zažmiruju na neke zločine, primaju mito i trguju informacijama, odnosno koja je njihova skrivena agenda, čime “The Corruptor” kao da je pripremao teren za “Paklene poslove” i “Pokojne”. Sve to, uključujući i Kinesku četvrt kao lokaciju, razlikuje solidnog “Potkupljivača” od “buddy” akcića devedesetih.

Nježnija strana akcijaša

Wahlberg se netom prije proslavio kao glumac ulogom u "Kralju pornića", a Yun-Fat je poslije ovog filma pokazao nježniju stranu u romansi "Anna i kralj" i romantičnoj borilačkoj fantaziji "Tigar i zmaj".

"Pališ se na sve kinesko, lud si za Kinezima", zavitlavaju policajci novog “bijelog” kolegu Dannyja Wallacea (Mark Wahlberg) kad bude dodijeljen u dominantno azijsku policijsku postaju u newyorškom Chinatownu, gdje će postati dio “Asian Gang Unit” odreda i partnerski se spariti s veteranom Nickom Chenom (Chow Yun-Fat). Zezancija iz “Potkupljivača” (“The Corruptor”, 1999.) odražava ozbiljnu hollywoodsku zaluđenost azijskim filmašima i zvijezdama u devedesetim godinama prošlog stoljaća.

Najprije je u Hollywood, na nagovor Van Dammea, stigao John Woo i tamo režirao nisku akcijskih filmova poput “Teške mete”, “Slomljene strijele” i “Čovjeka bez lica”. Za njim su, također zavaljujući Van Dammeu, došli Ringo Lam (“Najveći rizik”) i Tsui Hark (“Dream Team”, “Pakleni udar”), a potom i glumci Jackie Chan (“Gas do daske”) i Jet Li (“Smrtonosno oružje 4”). Bilo je očekivano da će stići i Yun-Fat, velika azijska zvijezda, akcijska ikona i kućni glumac Wooa (“Žestoki policajac”).

Yun-Fat je ostvario hollywoodski debi 1998. pored oskarovke Mire Sorvino u “Elitnim ubojicama” Antoinea Fuque koji je vješto kopirao stil Wooa kao i vršnjački “Veliki pogodak”, američki prvijenac Che-Kirka Wonga sa, zanimljivo, Wahlbergom u glavnoj ulozi. “Potkupljivač” je bio Yun-Fatov drugi hollywoodski film i glumac je bio znatno opušteniji i osjećao se udobnije pred kamerom američkog redatelja, gotovo kao kod Wooa, potvrđujući titulu kulerskog hongkonškog Alaina Delona.

Pa ipak, “The Corruptor” je samo naizgled bio stilizirana hongkonška “shoot ‘em up” akcija po mjeri Wooa prebačena u američki milje, kao “The Replacement Killers”. Film počinje s blockbusterskim praskom (podmetanje bombe u Kineskoj četvrti), negativcima snimljenim iz donjeg rakursa i pucačinom ovjekovječenom i u usporenom pokretu.

Međutim, kako “Potkupljivač” ide dalje, jasno je da redatelju Jamesu Foleyju (“Bliska meta”, “Kad padne mrak, ljubavi moja”, “Glengarry Glen Ross”, “Komora”) nije samo do akcijskog kopiranja Wooa kao Fuqui ili snimanja “Gasa do daske 2” i “Smrtonosnog oružja 5”, neovisno o tome što Kim Chan opet glumi lika zvanog Uncle Benny kao u “Lethal Weapon 4”.

Specijaliziran za krimi drame s temom morala i karakterne studije, Foley odbija snimiti jeftin akcić i prodati ga kao nešto skupo. Ima jedna rečenica u filmu kad kineski mafijaš Henry Lee (Ric Young; “Posljednji kineski car”) govori Chenu kako “izrada ručnog sata košta jedan dolar, a neki ga kupuju za 100 i precijenjuju njegovu vrijednost”.

Foley ne želi nešto tako, ali i koristi Leejev savjet Chenu “Nemoj precijeniti svoju vrijednost”. Redatelj kao da se drži filozofije Prljavog Harryja iz drugog dijela njegovog serijala “Čovjek mora znati svoje limite”. Naime, Foley zna da nije akcijski kalibar jednog Wooa, stoga ne stavlja akciju u prvi plan filma, iako je režirana više nego korektno.

Likovi policajaca i dijalozi njegov su forte s obligatornim klišejima “buddy cop” akcića (“Kao Cagney i Lacey”, veli Chen). No, Foley u tom smislu ne zalazi na teren akcijske komedije a la “Rush Hour”, već policajce pokušava načiniti nešto slojevitijima, od Chena do Wallacea kao sina osramoćena policajca (Brian Cox).

Jednako tako, Foley nastoji približiti zbivanja (akcijskom) krimiću sedamdesetih na tragu “Francuske veze” s ponekim “twistom” karakterističnim za devedesete, makar “Potkupljivač” ne ide toliko daleko kao “Privedite osumnjičene” ili “Šesto čulo”. U Foleyjevu filmu podjednako se puca i priča, nema puno više “slow motiona” negoli u prosječnom američkom akciću devedesetih, a dogođajnost je ovjekovječena i kamerom iz ruke kao kod Sidneyja Lumeta i njegovih urbanih uličnih klasika sedamdesetih s Alom Pacinom (“Serpico”, “Pasje popodne”).

Korupcija u policiji i “good cop-bad cop” nijanse dobra i zla, morala i nemorala, intrigiraju Foleyja koji ubacuje u igru motiv izdaje, FBI i Unutarnju kontrolu, dajući filmu dašak kriminalističko-dramske kompleksnosti. Povremeno se ne zna kojoj su strani likovi naklonjeni, policiji ili mafiji s vezama u policiji, dok zažmiruju na neke zločine, primaju mito i trguju informacijama, odnosno koja je njihova skrivena agenda, čime “The Corruptor” kao da je pripremao teren za “Paklene poslove” i “Pokojne”. Sve to, uključujući i Kinesku četvrt kao lokaciju, razlikuje solidnog “Potkupljivača” od “buddy” akcića devedesetih.

Nježnija strana akcijaša

Wahlberg se netom prije proslavio kao glumac ulogom u "Kralju pornića", a Yun-Fat je poslije ovog filma pokazao nježniju stranu u romansi "Anna i kralj" i romantičnoj borilačkoj fantaziji "Tigar i zmaj".
